Travertine Hot Springs
Travertine Hot Springs is a hot spring with developed pools near Bridgeport in Mono County, California. Water at the source is recorded at 180°F (82°C), hot enough to scald. Records place it on public land. Clothing-optional soaking is common there.
Travertine is the easiest wild spring in the Eastern Sierra: a graded dirt road off Highway 395 ends in a parking lot, and the first pools are a two-minute walk. Hot water runs down a travertine fin into a line of shallow pools, cooling as it goes, so you can pick a temperature by moving downstream.
The pools nearest the source are too hot to enter. The lower pools below the ridge sit around 100 to 104°F most of the year. Expect mud on the bottom and a small crowd on weekends.
Getting there
From Bridgeport, drive south on US 395 for about half a mile, turn left on Jack Sawyer Road, and follow the dirt road roughly a mile to the parking area. Passenger cars manage it in dry conditions. In winter the road is often snowed in and the walk is about a mile.

Quick answers
- Can you soak at Travertine Hot Springs?
- Records place Travertine Hot Springs on public land. That is not a guarantee of current access: closures, fire restrictions and road conditions change, so check with the land manager before you go.
- How hot is Travertine Hot Springs?
- The hottest recorded reading at the source is 180°F (82°C). That is the outlet temperature, not a pool temperature; water cools as it flows away from the source. Water this hot can cause serious burns, so test any pool by hand first.

Before you go
- Temperatures are measured at the source and can be far hotter than any soaking pool. Test with a hand before stepping in.
- Access, fees, and road conditions change. Verify with the land manager or owner; "public" here reflects survey records, not a current right of entry.
- Water in natural springs is untreated. Keep your head above water and avoid soaking with open wounds. Some springs carry Naegleria fowleri risk.
- Pack out everything, including soap residue. Many springs have been closed because of trash and overcrowding.
