Montana hot springs

75 springs, hottest at the source is Ennis Hot Springs at 181°F.

Montana has plenty of hot water, 75 springs in this directory, but very little of it is free to sit in. Nearly every soakable spring was homesteaded, piped and built over between the 1860s and the 1920s, and the surviving pools are lodges, plunges and family resorts, a few of them on their third or fourth owner. That makes Montana an easy state for a soaking road trip: you can drive from Yellowstone’s north gate to the Idaho line and sleep at a hot springs almost every night. It is a poor state for the primitive-pool purist, and the one wild soak everyone used to know, Boiling River in Yellowstone, has been closed since the 2022 floods.

Where the springs are

Paradise Valley and Yellowstone’s north entrance. Chico Hot Springs in Pray, established in 1900 as the Chico Warm Springs Hotel, is the state’s best-known resort, with a historic lodge, restaurant and live music, about 48 miles from Bozeman. The directory records the Chico source at 113°F. Closer to the park, Yellowstone Hot Springs near Gardiner, about eight miles north of the north entrance, has two hot pools and a cold plunge along the Yellowstone River; the directory’s Laduke (Corwin) Hot Spring at 154°F is its source.

Bozeman and the Madison Valley. Bozeman Hot Springs, west of town, has twelve indoor and outdoor pools ranging from 59°F to 106°F, dry and wet saunas, a cold plunge and a bandstand for summer concerts; note that it closes from sundown Friday until sunset Saturday. Norris Hot Springs, on Highway 84 toward Ennis, is a single artesian-fed pool with a stage at one end for weekend bands, and food, beer and wine on site. Bear Trap Hot Springs in the Madison canyon, Ennis Hot Springs (181°F) and Renova Hot Springs near Whitehall are in the directory as sources; Renova is one of the state’s rare free riverbank soaks when the Jefferson is low.

Butte, Anaconda and Helena. Fairmont Hot Springs outside Anaconda is the big family resort, with two Olympic-size swimming pools, two mineral soaking pools and a 350-foot enclosed waterslide, but its pools are for resort guests only; Gregson Hot Springs (158°F) is its source name in the directory. Boulder Hot Springs south of Helena is a historic hotel with indoor plunges, steam rooms and an outdoor pool, fed by a 169°F source. Broadwater Hot Springs in Helena (151°F) has a bench-lined springs pool fed by an artesian well and cooled to soaking temperature.

The Bitterroot and the Clark Fork. Lolo Hot Springs, on US 12 near the Idaho line, has an indoor mineral pool and an outdoor pool at 102°F to 106°F, and is the last stop before Jerry Johnson across the pass. Quinns Hot Springs near Paradise on the Clark Fork is a riverside lodge with six pools, sold as reserved swim sessions or included with a stay. Sleeping Child Hot Springs near Hamilton is a private lodge rented to groups, and Medicine Hot Springs nearby changed hands in 2026, so verify access.

The Big Hole and Grasshopper valleys. Jackson Hot Springs Lodge, in a town of about 40 people in the Big Hole Valley, has one outdoor pool with warmer and cooler ends, a lodge bar and restaurant, weekend live music and cabins and camping. Elkhorn Hot Springs near Polaris is a rustic lodge with two outdoor pools, an indoor wet sauna and a restaurant.

Hot Springs, Montana, and the Flathead. The town of Hot Springs on the Flathead Reservation has Symes Hot Springs Hotel, Camas Hot Springs (113°F) and several small bathhouses and plunges; Wild Horse Hot Springs is a nearby cabin-and-tub operation.

The Hi-Line. Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs near Saco, on US 2, has a main pool, hot tub and sauna and is the only developed soak in northeastern Montana, a long way from everything else on this page. White Sulphur Springs, in the center of the state, has Spa Hot Springs with three mineral pools fed by a 136°F source.

When to go

Year-round, and winter is the point. Montana’s resorts are open through the cold months, and a soak in falling snow at Chico, Norris or Quinn’s is the version to aim for. Summer brings concerts at Bozeman and Norris and the chance to combine soaking with Yellowstone. Renova and the other riverbank seeps are only usable in low water, late summer into fall.

Etiquette and safety

  • Yellowstone: soaking in thermal features is prohibited, Boiling River is closed, and the park warns that all thermal water can carry organisms that cause illness. Soak outside the park.
  • Resort rules: swimsuits, no glass, and check hours; Bozeman’s Friday-to-Saturday closure catches visitors every week.
  • Most of Montana’s remaining undeveloped springs are on private ranch land. Fences mean no; ask in town before walking in.
  • Several directory sources exceed 150°F (Ennis, Laduke, Boulder, Gregson). Never enter water at the source.
  • Winter driving to the valley lodges means ice, deer and long gaps between fuel stops. Book ahead; Jackson and Elkhorn run limited schedules.

Practical logistics

Bozeman is the hub with the airport and the shortest drives to Chico, Norris and Bozeman Hot Springs. Missoula serves Lolo, Quinn’s and the Bitterroot. Butte sits between Fairmont, Boulder and the Big Hole. Gardiner is the base for Yellowstone Hot Springs and the park’s north entrance. Nearly every resort on this page has rooms or cabins on site.
