Every Hot Spring

Utah hot springs

126 springs, hottest at the source is Crystal Hot Springs at 187°F. 6 are on public land.

Utah is compact by hot springs standards. This directory lists 134 Utah springs, and nearly everything worth soaking in sits within two hours of Salt Lake City or along Interstate 15 to the south. The pattern is a handful of free, heavily visited public sites and a larger set of family-run commercial pools, several of which have been operating for more than a century.

Where the springs are

The Wasatch Front and Diamond Fork. Fifth Water Hot Springs, usually just called Diamond Fork, is Utah’s signature hike-in soak: a 4.5-mile round trip from the Three Forks trailhead in Diamond Fork Canyon on the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, ending at a double waterfall and a string of pools around 100°F to 102°F below a 111°F source. It is about 40 minutes from Provo. Parking at the trailhead carries a fee paid by cash or check at a kiosk, and roadside parking is ticketed and towed. From mid-November to late April a gate closes the road and adds three miles each way. Nudity is illegal here and the Forest Service says so plainly. Weekend lots fill by 8 a.m.

In the Heber Valley, Homestead (the Homestead Crater at Midway) is a 65-foot-deep geothermal pool inside a limestone dome, entered by a tunnel, at roughly 90°F to 96°F; it is one of very few warm-water scuba sites in the country and takes paid, timed entries. The Midway Hot Springs entries in this directory are the same geothermal system. Closer to the city, Saratoga Springs and Inlet Park on Utah Lake are warm-water day-use parks, and Wasatch Hot Springs and Becks Hot Spring on the north edge of Salt Lake City are the historic springs behind the old Wasatch Springs Plunge, neither of which is an open soak today.

Northern Utah. Crystal (Madsens) Hot Springs in Honeyville, north of Brigham City, has been a commercial pool since 1901, with hot and cold mineral pools side by side and waterslides in summer. Ogden Hot Spring and Utah Hot Springs are the Ogden Canyon and Pleasant View sources; Cutler Warm Spring and Hooper Hot Springs (140°F) are in farm country and not developed.

Central Utah and the Sevier Valley. Mystic Hot Springs in Monroe pipes hot water into bathtubs and pools set into a travertine mound and rents cabins and old buses. Red Hill Hot Springs, just up the hill, is a free public pool that closes at dusk, below a 171°F source. Monroe (Cooper) Hot Springs and Joseph Hot Springs are the other Sevier Valley sources. West of Fillmore, Meadow Hot Springs is a clear, deep pool on private ranch land that the owners have historically kept open to the public; it is free, a short walk from the parking area, and the kind of place that stays open only as long as visitors behave. Baker Hot Springs near Delta is recorded at 180°F and is only usable where the flow has cooled and mixed.

Southwest Utah. Veyo Hot Spring north of St. George is a small seasonal commercial pool. The old Pah Tempe springs in the Virgin River canyon at La Verkin are closed to direct access; their water now supplies the Zion Canyon resort pools. Thermo Hot Springs in Beaver County (181°F) is a geothermal field, not a soak.

The West Desert. Gandy Warm Springs near the Nevada line, Blue Lake Spring near Wendover (a popular dive site) and Fish Springs on the refuge are far from anything and reward a dedicated trip in mild weather.

When to go

Fifth Water is a year-round destination and the winter hike through snow to a steaming pool is the version locals love, but the extra road miles and ice on the trail make it a real outing; bring traction. Spring runoff can flood the lower pools. The commercial pools run all year, and Crystal Hot Springs is at its best on a cold night. West Desert springs are for spring and fall.

Etiquette and safety

  • Utah is not a clothing-optional state. Nudity at Fifth Water is cited, and the commercial pools require suits.
  • Do not drink the water or let dogs drink it, and keep the water out of your mouth and nose; the Forest Service warning at Diamond Fork is explicit.
  • Pack out everything at Fifth Water. The site’s crowding is the main threat to its remaining open.
  • Meadow is private land. No glass, no fires, no camping in the parking area, and leave the gate as you found it.
  • Several directory entries (Baker, Red Hill, Hooper, Thermo) have sources above 140°F. Test with a hand and only enter mixed pools.

Practical logistics

Salt Lake City, Provo and Spanish Fork are all within an hour of Diamond Fork; the paved road runs 11 miles from the highway turnoff. Midway and Heber have lodging near the Crater, which needs reservations. For Monroe and Meadow, Richfield and Fillmore on I-15 are the service towns. Crystal Hot Springs is an easy stop between Salt Lake and Idaho. The West Desert springs need a full tank, a spare and no expectation of cell service.
