Every Hot Spring

California hot springs

351 springs, hottest at the source is The Geysers at 214°F. 14 are on public land.

California holds 389 records in this directory, the most of any state, and the variety is wider than anywhere else: free BLM tubs in the Eastern Sierra, a 19th-century bathhouse town in wine country, cliffside baths above the Pacific, and springs in Death Valley that take most of a day to reach. The flip side is that California’s springs are famous, close to big cities and heavily used, so the free sites come with more rules, more closures and more company than in Idaho or Nevada.

Where the springs are

The Eastern Sierra (US 395, Bridgeport to Bishop). This is the densest group of free, soakable springs in the state. Around Bridgeport, Travertine Hot Springs is a developed site with several pools on a travertine ridge, and Buckeye Hot Springs is a creekside soak on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. South of Mammoth Lakes, the Long Valley caldera holds a loose constellation of BLM tubs: Wild Willy’s Hot Springs, Hilltop Hot Spring, Crab Cooker Hot Springs, Shepherd Hot Springs, Rock Tub Hot Spring and Whitmore Hot Springs, all reached on dirt roads off Benton Crossing Road. Benton Hot Springs to the east is privately run. Keough Hot Springs south of Bishop is a paid historic pool; the Keough Hot Ditch beside it is the overflow channel that people soak in for free.

Hot Creek, the spectacular gorge near Mammoth, is a viewing site only. The Forest Service fenced the swimming area in 2006 after springs in the creek began geysering scalding water without warning, and the Mammoth district ranger has said it is unlikely to reopen. The Hot Creek Gorge Springs entry here is recorded at 199°F.

Big Sur and the Central Coast. Esalen’s cliffside baths belong to the institute’s guests and workshop participants; the institute has historically opened them to the public only in the small hours by reservation, so check its site for the current arrangement. Tassajara Hot Springs, a Zen monastery deep in the Ventana Wilderness, takes public reservations each summer. Sykes Hot Spring, the famous ten-mile backpack on the Pine Ridge Trail, is a different story: the rock pools were destroyed by storms in the 2017 to 2018 winter, and the Forest Service, which considers built pools illegal in wilderness, said in 2020 they would not be rebuilt. Treat it as a hike, not a soak.

Southern California. Deep Creek Hot Springs on the San Bernardino National Forest is the busiest primitive spring in the state. The main route drops 2.5 miles from Bowen Ranch, where a private fee is charged; the alternative is about six miles along the Pacific Crest Trail. No camping, no fires, no trash service, and the Forest Service warns of amoeba risk and high fecal coliform counts, so keep your head out of the water. Sespe Hot Springs in the Sespe Wilderness is recorded at 194°F and is a long backcountry trip. Big Caliente Hot Springs above Santa Barbara is a Los Padres National Forest soaking tub. Glen Ivy Hot Springs near Corona is a day spa; Warner Springs in San Diego County has had its pools closed for redevelopment; Agua Caliente Springs near Anza-Borrego is a county park pool.

Northern California. Harbin Hot Springs in Lake County, Wilbur Hot Springs in Colusa County, Orrs Springs and Vichy Springs near Ukiah are retreat-style resorts, each with its own rules and reservations. Calistoga Hot Springs in the Napa Valley is a spa town rather than a single spring.

The deserts. Tecopa Hot Springs south of Death Valley is a cluster of small bathhouses and pools. Saline Valley Hot Springs, inside Death Valley National Park, are the remote classic: reached by long washboard roads, with a park entrance fee and nothing else for sale within hours.

When to go

The Eastern Sierra is best from May through October; Benton Crossing Road area tubs are reachable most of the year but the dirt spurs turn to mud and ice. Southern California and the deserts flip the calendar: October through April, because Deep Creek’s canyon and Saline Valley regularly top 100°F in summer. Big Sur is year-round but subject to fire and storm closures.

Etiquette and safety

  • Check fire restrictions and closures before you leave; the Inyo, Los Padres and San Bernardino forests all post alerts, and closures here are frequent.
  • No potable water at any primitive site. Carry your own, and extra for the desert.
  • Expect crowds on weekends at every spring within three hours of Los Angeles or the Bay Area. Go on a weekday or at dawn.
  • Nudity is common at the Long Valley tubs and Deep Creek but is not legal everywhere; follow posted signs.
  • Keep your head above water. Amoeba warnings are posted at Deep Creek, and untreated spring water carries the same risk anywhere it is warm and still.
  • Dirt roads to the Long Valley tubs and Saline Valley are passable to passenger cars when dry and not when wet. Turn around rather than rut them.

Practical logistics

Mammoth Lakes and Bishop are the bases for the Eastern Sierra, with lodging, fuel and groceries. Bridgeport serves Travertine and Buckeye. For Deep Creek, Hesperia and Apple Valley are the last services. Saline Valley is a two-day commitment with a full tank, two spares and no cell signal.
