Oregon hot springs

144 springs, hottest at the source is Hot Springs at 207°F. 8 are on public land.

Oregon has two hot springs personalities. West of the Cascade crest, within a couple of hours of Portland and Eugene, the springs are in deep fir forest, reached by short trails and managed by the Forest Service or a concessionaire, usually with a per-person fee and posted rules. East of the crest, in the sagebrush of Harney and Lake counties, they are remote, mostly free or cheap, and nobody is watching. This directory lists 163 Oregon springs; the ones below are the soakable core.

The Cascades

Bagby Hot Springs (Mt. Hood National Forest). The most storied soak in the state: hand-hewn cedar tubs in log bathhouses, 1.4 to 1.5 miles up a trail from the Bagby trailhead, about 26 miles past Estacada on Highway 224 and then three forest roads. The Forest Service charges a cash fee per person plus a soaking fee, prohibits camping at the springs (there is a campground at the trailhead) and prohibits public nudity. Forest Roads 46 and 63 are prone to rockfall and slides, phone map apps routinely send people the wrong way, and the site shuts for wildfire closures and for winter once the roads snow in, usually until April. Check the forest’s alerts page before driving out.

Terwilliger, also called Cougar (Willamette National Forest). Four stepped pools in a ravine a quarter mile from Aufderheide Drive (Forest Road 19), about nine miles from Blue River. Day use only from sunrise to 10 p.m., a per-person fee paid on site, no alcohol, no pets, and clothing optional below the road but not visible from it. The 2018 Terwilliger Fire burned the area and the Forest Service still warns about loose rock and falling trees.

Umpqua Hot Springs (Umpqua National Forest). Travertine pools on a bluff above the North Umpqua River near Toketee Falls, reached by a short steep trail, with a per-vehicle day fee.

Breitenbush, Belknap and the McKenzie. Breitenbush Hot Springs east of Detroit is a retreat center with reservations and its own etiquette (clothing optional, quiet). Belknap Hot Springs on the McKenzie Highway is a lodge with swimsuit-required pools. Bigelow Hot Spring and Deer Creek Hot Springs are small riverside pools on the same road; McCredie Hot Springs and Wall Creek Warm Springs are south near Oakridge, with McCredie charging a vehicle fee.

Around Bend. Paulina Hot Springs and East Lake Hot Springs in Newberry National Volcanic Monument are lakeshore seeps; East Lake is only reachable in late summer and fall.

The high desert

Alvord Hot Springs. Two concrete pools, one open to the sky and one with wind walls, on the east flank of Steens Mountain overlooking the Alvord Desert playa, about 23 miles north of Fields on the Fields-Denio Road. It is privately owned and charges a day-use fee; there are tent and RV sites, bunkhouses and a small store, and overnight guests get longer pool hours. Burns, the nearest real town, is around two hours away. Mickey Hot Springs to the north (187°F) and Borax Lake (Hot Lake) to the south are viewing sites where soaking is not allowed.

Crystal Crane Hot Springs near Burns is a large warm pond with a bathhouse and lodging, and the easiest desert soak to reach from Bend. Summer Lake Hot Springs and Hunters Hot Springs (205°F at the source) near Lakeview, and Antelope Hot Springs on the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, round out the Lake County group. In Malheur County, Snively Hot Spring on the Owyhee River (170°F) and the Juntura Warm Springs are roadside soaks that are too hot in summer and best in cooler months.

Northeast Oregon has a scattered handful: Ritter Hot Springs, Lehman Hot Springs, Radium Hot Springs, Medical Hot Spring and Hot Lake Springs outside La Grande.

When to go

Late spring and fall are best statewide. The Cascade springs are open year-round but the access roads are not plowed, and Bagby in particular is effectively closed once snow arrives. Terwilliger’s road is unmaintained in winter. In the desert, summer is brutally hot on the playa and winter brings snow on Steens, so April through June and September through October are the sweet spots.

Etiquette and safety

  • Bring cash. Bagby, Terwilliger, Umpqua and McCredie all collect fees on site and do not take passes or cards.
  • Rules differ by site: nudity is prohibited at Bagby and legal below the road at Terwilliger. Read the sign at the trailhead.
  • No alcohol at Terwilliger; no dogs at the springs there either.
  • At Bagby, drain your tub when you leave and refill it half full so it cools for the next person.
  • Do not trust phone navigation on Forest Roads 46, 63 and 70. Use the Forest Service directions and park off the fog line.
  • Desert springs often have scalding sources beside soakable pools. Test first, and keep your head above water in any warm, still pool.

Practical logistics

Portland is the base for Bagby (allow two hours each way), Eugene for Terwilliger and the McKenzie springs, Roseburg for Umpqua. Bend reaches Crystal Crane in about two hours and Alvord in about four. Fuel up in Burns or Fields before the Alvord road; the final 12 miles from the south are paved but there is nothing else out there. Book Breitenbush and Belknap ahead, and Alvord’s bunkhouses on summer weekends.
