Idaho hot springs

291 springs, hottest at the source is BLM Well at 203°F. 12 are on public land.

Idaho is the state most serious soakers end up measuring everything else against. Southwest Idaho’s tourism office counts about 130 soakable springs, the most of any state, and the great majority of them are free pools on National Forest land rather than resorts. This directory holds 291 Idaho records, which includes separate entries for individual pools at a few sites, plus wells and warm seeps that are not worth a detour. The useful ones fall into five clusters.

Where the springs are

The South Fork Payette corridor (Highway 21, Boise to Lowman to Stanley). This is the classic Idaho hot springs road. Kirkham Hot Springs sits inside a Boise National Forest campground five miles east of Lowman, with a staircase trail down to pools and small steaming waterfalls at the river’s edge. Non-campers pay a small cash day-use fee. Continue east for Bonneville Hot Springs and Sacajawea Hot Springs, both recorded at well over 150°F at the source, so the soakable water is wherever creek and spring mix. Pine Flats Hot Springs is just west of Lowman.

The Sawtooths and the Salmon River (Stanley, Highway 75). Sunbeam Hot Springs and Boat Box Hot Spring are roadside soaks a few miles out of Stanley. Boat Box is a single metal tub fed by scalding water; the bucket is for hauling cold river water. Farther east, Goldbug Hot Springs near Salmon is the state’s best-known hike-in soak: a four-mile round trip on Salmon-Challis National Forest land, free, with terraced pools and a waterfall. Camp more than 500 feet from the water.

The Lochsa (US 12, between Lowell and the Montana line). Jerry Johnson Hot Springs is at milepost 152, a 1.3-mile walk from the Warm Springs trailhead on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest. It is day use only, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., with no overnight camping, and the Forest Service says it patrols and cites. The lowest riverside pool is usually underwater until late summer. Weir Creek Hot Springs and Stanley Hot Springs are on the same highway.

McCall, Cascade and the Middle Fork Payette (Highway 55). Burgdorf Hot Springs, 30 miles north of McCall on Warren Wagon Road, is a historic resort with cabins lit by oil lamps and no electricity; in winter it is snowmobile access only. Gold Fork Hot Springs south of McCall has six tiered pools at stepped temperatures. Trail Creek Hot Springs east of Cascade is a short walk to small pools over a mountain stream, and Rocky Canyon Hot Springs is 12 miles past Crouch above the Middle Fork.

The south: Lava Hot Springs and the Magic Valley. Lava Hot Springs, in the Portneuf River valley southeast of Pocatello, is the developed option: five mineral pools open 363 days a year, a summer Olympic pool complex, and river tubing through town. Alcohol and glass are banned at the pools. Along the Snake River near Buhl, Banbury Hot Spring and Hot Sulphur (Miracle Hot) Springs are commercial pools; farther off the grid are Murphy Hot Springs and Givens Hot Springs near Melba.

Around Ketchum and Sun Valley, Frenchman’s Hot Springs (also mapped as Warfield) is 10.5 miles out Warm Springs Road, mostly dirt, and two of its three pools require wading the creek. The road ices in winter and closes for spring runoff from mid-March into June.

When to go

Most of Idaho’s springs sit between 4,000 and 7,000 feet in national forest, so late June through October is the easy window: dirt roads are dry, river levels are down, and pools that spend spring underwater reappear. Winter soaking is wonderful and entirely possible at roadside sites, but Highway 21 between Lowman and Stanley closes intermittently for avalanche control through the Grandjean to Banner Summit stretch, so check Idaho 511 before committing to that road. Spring runoff (April into June) buries or chills the pools that sit right at river level.

Etiquette and safety

  • Source temperatures in this directory are often 150°F or hotter. Soakable water comes from mixing; test with a hand before a foot, and never step into a pool you have not felt.
  • Day-use hours are enforced at the popular sites. Jerry Johnson’s 8 p.m. close and no-camping rule are the model, and other districts post similar limits.
  • Nudity is common at remote pools and tolerated at many, but it is not a right. Read the room, especially at Kirkham and Jerry Johnson, which draw families.
  • Cash. Kirkham, Bonneville’s campground and many trailheads take no cards.
  • No glass, no soap, no shampoo in the water, and pack out everything including food scraps. Springs get closed when they get trashed; the BLM shut Skinny Dipper in 2016 for exactly that reason.
  • Rivers next to the pools run cold and fast. Keep children and dogs off the wet rocks.

Practical logistics

Boise is the natural base for Highway 21 and Highway 55; Stanley for the Sawtooths; Missoula or Lewiston for the Lochsa. Cell service vanishes a few miles into every canyon, so download maps. Most forest campgrounds near springs are reservable on recreation.gov and fill on summer weekends. If you want a bed, Lowman, Garden Valley, Stanley, McCall and Lava Hot Springs all have lodging, and Boise is less than an hour from The Springs at Idaho City if you would rather pay for a clean pool and a glass of wine.
